Bayern stunned at home by Augsburg as Dortmund trim gap
24.01.2026, 19:27
Leaders Bayern Munich lost for the first time in the Bundesliga this season after Augsburg came from behind to secure a famous 2-1 win at their big Bavarian neighbours on Saturday.
Hiroki Ito had put Bayern ahead when he nodded in Bundesliga assist king Michael Olise's corner. But Arthur Chaves exposed reserve Bayern keeper Jonas Urbig and Han-Noah Massengo netted an 81st-minute winner. Olise rattled the woodwork with the last action of the game.
Bayern, who qualified for the Champions League last 16 in midweek, were lacklustre against 13th-placed Augsburg and were missing several defenders while Manuel Neuer was rested.
"A win for us would not have been deserved," Bayern's Joshua Kimmich told Sky TV after their first home league defeat by Augsburg since 2015. It was also the first time Bayern have failed to score at least two goals this Bundesliga season.
Kimmich - whose side's only other loss this term was to Arsenal in the Champions League - said "hunger" was lacking, adding: We weren't very fresh, we couldn't find a consistent rhythm over the 90 minutes. Now we have to show a reaction."
Borussia Dortmund cut the gap to eight points after 19 games with a 3-0 win in the late game at Union Berlin.
Emre Can scored a crucial penalty for the second straight Bundesliga weekend and ex-Union defender Nico Schlotterbeck headed in a corner. Maxi Beier added the classy third as the Black and Yellows bounced back from the Champions League loss at Tottenham.
They host Inter on Wednesday with an outside chance of last-16 progression rather than the play-offs.
Third-placed Hoffenheim came back to win 3-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to Max Moerstedt and Ozan Kabak headers and an own goal.
Arnaud Kalimuendo's second league goal since joining this month had given the Eagles, in seventh, the lead but their joint-worst Bundesliga defence continues to ship goals. This was the fifth straight game in all competitions where they have conceded three.
Interim Frankfurt coach Dennis Schmitt replaced Dino Toppmöller last weekend but has now been in charge for two defeats including the Champion League elimination at Azerbaijan's Qarabag.
Vázquez joy for Leverkusen
RB Leipzig moved up into fourth after a 3-0 victory at now bottom side Heidenheim courtesy of Ridle Baku's left-foot rocket, a neat finish from Antonio Nusa and David Raum's shot off the bar.
VfB Stuttgart can reclaim the last Champions League berth in Sunday's clash at Borussia Mönchengladbach - albeit having played a game more. Freiburg also play Cologne.
Bayer Leverkusen, in sixth, snapped a three-game losing streak in all competitions after Lucas Vázquez netted his first Bundesliga goal in a 1-0 success over Werder Bremen.
Mainz rose to third-bottom after a 3-1 comeback win over Wolfsburg.
Stefan Bell and Nadiem Amiri's penalty made the game safe after Phillip Tietz made amends for having a penalty saved when he headed in the equalizer. Mohamed Amoura scored early for the Wolves.
In Munich, Bayern led through Ito's first goal of an injury-hit season when he headed in Olise's corner amid clever blocking.
Olise has as many as 16 league assists according to some statisticians and is closing in on ex-Bayern star Thomas Müller's Bundesliga season record of 21 from 2019-20.
But the second half turned sour for Bayern as Urbig failed to claim a corner and Chaves nodded in before Massengo finished off a fine move.
Augsburg interim coach Manuel Baum, appointed for the rest of the season last month, said: "The first thing we said in the changing room is that we shouldn't get caught up in the hype of this win."
But he acknowledged he would allow his players a beer.
