Alexander Zverev earned double wins to propel Germany past the Netherlands 3-0 on Sunday at the United Cup.
Playing his first match of 2026, Zverev defeated Tallon Griekspoor 7-5, 6-0 in Sydney.
World number three Zverev said he found it hard to find his rhythm in the first set.
"Once I got the chances, I did well and I’m very happy with the win," he said in his on-court interview.
"I think my serve was all right, to be honest," he said.
"Everything else was difficult to judge because there wasn’t many long rallies, there wasn’t really much rhythm, but a win is a win."
He then partnered Laura Siegemund to win 6-3, 6-2 against Griekspoor and Demi Schuurs in the mixed doubles.
Earlier, Eva Lys launched Germany to a strong start, downing Suzan Lamens 6-2, 6-2.
Lys, playing in her first career United Cup match, won a pair of crucial games to establish a 5-2 lead.
"As soon as I stepped on the court, I saw how many people are watching ... I was actually quite nervous," Lys said.
"First of all, I was definitely running a marathon with Suzan. I definitely was very good on the most important points.
"I feel like I played pretty straightforward and not too aggressive, and I feel like that was the key," she said.
