Bayern keeper Neuer out for rest of year with hamstring tear

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer is out until next year after a right hamstring tear, the Bundesliga leaders said a day after the 2-2 draw against Mainz on Sunday.

For the last game of year at lowly Heidenheim on Sunday, Jonas Urbig will again deputize. The 22-year-old has featured in four competitive matches so far this season.

After a short mid-season break, Bayern have a friendly at Salzburg on January 6 before hosting Wolfsburg on January 11 in the Bundesliga. It is unclear when Neuer will be back fit.

The former Germany stopper, 39, has had a series of niggles over recent years and does not have a contract for next season yet.
