14.08.2025, 10:18

Most Germans appear sceptical about the summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin set to take place in Alaska on Friday, according to a new survey by public broadcaster ZDF.

Only 13% of respondents believe Trump will be able to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine at the meeting, while 84% are sceptical about such an outcome.

Just 14% of Germans think Putin has a genuine interest in a lasting ceasefire, while 82% do not believe he does. The survey also found that nine out of 10 respondents consider direct Ukrainian involvement in talks essential for a lasting ceasefire.

Germans are divided over potential territorial concessions by Ukraine to Russia. About 42% support Ukraine giving up part of the territory currently occupied by Russia if it meant an end to the war, while 45% believe Ukraine should continue fighting to reclaim the occupied regions.

The survey polled 1,370 randomly selected eligible voters by phone and online between August 11 and August 13.
