Hold the farewell: Berlin-Prague 'Knödel Express' isn't gone just yet

As part of a modernization of train connections between Prague and Berlin, the era of the beloved "Knödel Express" was supposed to come to an end - but it seems a taste of the old tradition will live on yet.

The Knödel Express (Dumpling Express) is the affectionate nickname given to the EuroCity trains operated by Czech Railways which run on the scenic route between Berlin, Dresden and Prague.

Czech Railways is replacing the decades-old carriages with ones that fit more people and can handle faster speeds.

The dining cars of the past, where schnitzel, bread dumplings and other meals were still freshly prepared on board, were meant to be laid to rest entirely - and with them a more romantic age of European rail travel.

But those who were preparing to mourn the Knödel Express can now take some comfort: Some of the trains on the route will continue to offer the familiar service.

The company announced this week that some connections will continue to include the original dining cars.

These are the EuroCity trains EC 378, EC 170 and EC 258, departing from Prague's main station, as well as the return trains from Berlin: EC 171, EC 379 and EC 259.

The other connections on the Prague–Berlin route will be served by the new ComfortJet trains.

In the press release, Czech Railways chief Michal Krapinec praised the new trains' features, including speeds of up to 230 kilometres per hour.

They also offer space for around 100 more passengers and can accommodate more bicycles.
