Several properties have been searched in Germany following allegations of abuse in gymnastics, the Stuttgart public prosecutor's office confirmed on Monday.

Police visited a training centre in the south-western city of Mannheim and an investigation has been launched into two coaches.

"The investigation concerns an attempted grievous bodily harm incident that occurred at the federal training centre in Mannheim," the prosecutor's office stated.

The incident is believed to have taken place in November 2016, sources close to the matter told dpa.

National junior coach Claudia Schunk was recently suspended by the German Gymnastics Federation. Schunk worked at the Mannheim centre for over 10 years.

There had previously been widespread allegations of physical and mental abuse at a Stuttgart training centre.
