Pedestrian association: Allow pedestrians to cross the road even when the lights are red

In New York, pedestrians are now legally allowed to cross the road at red lights. This should also be allowed in Germany - modelled on the ‘green arrow’ for cars, one association demands.

The pedestrian association ‘Fuss e.V.’ is calling for pedestrians to be allowed to cross the road even when traffic lights are red. ‘If you feel safe, look and walk. If you want to rely on green, wait as before,’ said board member Roland Stimpel to the Rheinische Post newspaper.
The model is the ‘green arrow’ for drivers, which also allows turning on red. ‘This breaks the taboo that you always have to stop on red,’ said Stimpel. ‘So why should it only continue to apply to pedestrians, who often stand on their own two feet at traffic lights?’ At pedestrian traffic lights where there is a good view of the carriageway, a ‘green arrow’ could be installed to allow pedestrians to walk freely.
In New York, it has been officially legal to jaywalk for a few days now. Previously, jaywalking was punishable by a fine of up to 300 dollars (275 euros).
