Germany to hold disability summit along with Jordan in Berlin in 2025

Germany is to hold a global summit on the rights of the disabled along with Jordan in the spring of 2025, Development Minister Svenja Schulze has announced.

The Global Disability Summit is to be held in Berlin and will be prepared together with the International Disability Alliance, Schulze said. The summit is the third of its kind, following on from London in 2018 and Oslo in 2022.

The minister described inclusion as a human right and "an obligation for all of us." Too little heed was being paid to the needs of around a billion disabled people around the world, she said.

Schulze noted that some 80% of disabled people lived in developing and industrializing countries, where they were often excluded from professional and social life.

The summit was aimed at promoting inclusion at an international level, she said.

Schulze was speaking to mark the International Day of Disabled Persons, which was held under UN auspices on Saturday. This group still faced disadvantages in their daily lives, in particular in gaining access to official services, in education and in working life, she said.
